Persuasive Speech on Conserving the Ocean

New postby lapas_the_bird » April 17, 2009 - 10:59 am

Hey

So I decided to pick the topic of Why we should conserve the ocean as my speech topic. My idea was to show how many products come from the ocean (ex Ice Cream-is made with Beta carotene) but I am having trouble finding foods and products.

I was wondering if you guys could give me some websites to use and if you guys have any other suggestions of how to approach this topic I was love to hear them

Thanks everyone in advance!

"The algal species, Kappaphycus alvarezii, is a source of a complex carbohydrate—carregeenan—used as a gelling agent in a range of products, from ice cream to shoe polish. "

Hello, saw the above in an article while browsing through this website's links, maybe you can use it.

One of the most significant things is that coral reefs hold many many many biological compounds that hold the potential to cure numerous diseases. A simple google search will find more information on that for you. Just don't get stuck on the myth that shark cartilage holds the cure to cancer - it doesn't. The reason people think it does is because of a myth that sharks don't get cancer. Well, guess what? They do. They don't hold a magic cure. Sponges, however, have proven more useful...

Other things:

Reefs protect the coastlines of tropical islands, because they take the most force from the waves coming in, making it so that the islands don't erode as fast, and during big storms, they buffer the wave action, and the damage is not nearly as bad. That's not exactly a "consumer product" but it sure is VERY important to hundreds of thousands of people.

Also, just look at food. A HUGE portion of the human population relies the ocean for more than 90% of their protein.

Other products: Eco-tourism - whale watching, dive tours, shark dives, exploration, etc.

I know those aren't the typical "consumer products" you're looking for, but some of them are worth far more, and are extremely important to saving the oceans.

NOSB: A great way for high schoolers to learn about the oceans.

A whale killed a dolphin but he was acquitted because he didn't do it on porpoise.
