Fisheries induced evolution in marine life
I'm not sure how much attention on this forum has been given to the issue of fisheries induced evolution in fish. As many of you probably know, this has emerged as an issue in the marine conservation world pretty recently and has generated a bit of controversy among scientists. The journal Evolutionary Applications just ran a special issue titled Toward Darwinian Fisheries Management that is devoted entirely to the topic:http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/119423602/home.
Conservation Maven just interviewed evolutionary ecologists Mikko Heino and Christian Jorgensen from the University of Bergen, Norway about the topic:
http://conservationmaven.com/frontpage/2009/9/28/exploring-human-induced-evolution-in-fish.html
They were guest editors for the special issue in Evolutionary Applications and give a really good, in-depth, overview of fisheries induced evolution.
I'm curious as to what people's thoughts are about this topic. Is this something that fisheries managers and policy makers are thinking about or is it off the radar screen?
