"Extending a sea ethic would mean recognizing the ocean’s importance to the continued existence of life on our planet and to human futures. From this recognition would flow an appropriate sense of moral imperative, commitment, and urgency—urgency toward ending overfishing and wasteful bycatch and aggressively rebuilding depleted ocean wildlife populations, stabilizing human effects on world climate, slowing habitat destruction, stemming global transport and accidental introduction of "alien" species, curbing the flow of contaminants and trash, developing sustainable seafood farming, cultivating an informed approach to the seafood marketplace, and implementing networks of protected areas in the sea." - Dr. Carl Safina

Just watched "Big Science: Giant Squid: Caught on Camera", excellent footage (especially liked the Sperm whales). Classic example of what happens when you don't have a competent scientist review the final script though, lots of inaccurate statements, for example:
"The Giant squid is not spineless..."
Of course it is, it's an invertebrate, oops. Maybe it was a bad translation from Japanese or something.
Dr. Steve O'Shea was in there and has apparently been trying to raise baby Giant squid... great idea (!), I didn't know the larvae was so easily found. Find out more about Steve-O here: http://www.tonmo.com/meet.php
Now we know a great place to find adult Giant squid, expect to see full-color video soon! Definitely see this show if you can....

Yep, they meant "passive" or "wimpy" or something... viewers shouldn't have to guess what they mean though... lol. The devil's in the details, as you know... especially in Science.

Yeah I just watched the Giant Squid special too...it was really amazing. I have to admit that I got a little choked up when they finally got pics. of it. I can only imagine the heartache and joy that goes into a discovery like that. I'd have to say it's the best thing I've seen during the whole "Shark Week" on Discovery. Oh I found this thing on the ecology of Alaska on tomorrow, Aug. 5 @3pm (central time) on PBS. It discusses the ecology of the coasts and land. http://www.klru.org/Schedule/ViewProgram.asp?VsnID=110516

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: Polar Bear Alcatraz airs tomorrow night - Sunday, August 6th - at 7:00pm ET/PT on Animal Planet.
Subzero temperatures and barren landscapes make Wrangel Island an inhospitable environment for all but the hardiest individuals. For several weeks every summer the pack ice surrounding Wrangel retreats, stranding hundreds of polar bears on her rocky shores. As food supplies on the island begin to dwindle, filmmaker Arne Naevra and polar bear expert Nikita Ovsyanikov find themselves embroiled in the story of an orphaned polar bear cub. The cub's struggle for survival becomes the struggle of an entire population, but this touching film closes with an offering of hope for the planet's largest land carnivore.

That episode on the Giant Squid was amazing. I made sure to tape it because i wasn't home when it was aired. I do have a question though. How big was the giant squid that was found near the end of the show? Didnt they say about 30 feet???

In the photos? Yes, they said about 30ft, so it was probably a "teenager"... lol.
